Pack Lightly

Have you ever traveled and regretted packing too much? As women we have the tendency to overpack. Our daily lives are usually crammed with things to do. Whether it's filled with our careers or obligations to our family and friends, it's easy to become unbalanced in life. Most of us have become like Martha, troubled about the many things we need to do and the cares of this world. The Bible tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7) When we pack lightly, we will find ourselves like Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus more often.

Have you ever gone on vacation and come back wearier than before you left? You need a vacation from your vacation. The Bible talks about the importance of moderation and relying on God's provision and rest. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." (Matthew 11:28-30). Packing lightly physically is the key to finding rest.

Physically we can overpack our suitcases with excessive material items that we don't need. The solution for this is easy - plan better and pack lighter. Take only the essential things you need. Physically, we can also carry too much soulish baggage around. Things like unforgiveness, other people's problems, anger, bitterness, and the wounds and traumas of life can weigh us down. God wants to heal us of all the unnecessary junk in our trunk. He has given us the Counselor to help us - the Holy Spirit . "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever." (John 14:16)

The healing of the soul can come in many forms. Some may need a therapist while others need a support group. There are many that need motivational, inspirational, or encouraging messages to heal. " Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and health to the bones." (Proverbs 16:24) I've discovered that many of the remedies for healing can be found in the Scriptures. Psalms 94:19 says, "When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul." Soul healing is a process that takes time. As a disciple, the Holy Spirit has been the best Comforter and Jesus the best Physician for me in this regard.

I am so grateful God has healed my soul. Has He healed yours? I'm ready to travel and pack lightly this summer. My itinerary has been planned by the Master. It includes an appreciation of the things He has created and lots of time at His feet.
